The Villages Woodwork’s Club

March 11, 2014

Laurel Manor

President Mike Borfitz called the meeting to order at 7 pm.

The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by attendees.

Mike welcomed all guest and new members.

As of February 11, the club has 810 paying members

The Woodshop has had 260 guests/visitors since February 11th.

Certification:  Dick Besler

Dick reminded everyone that there will be certification on the 20th of March.  He thanked the members for being courteous by shutting down the machines to lower the noise level while certification is being conducted.

Monitor training will be on the 19th and the 26th of March to complete the extra classes.  Starting in April the Monitor training will be the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month.

Shop Administration: Dave Adamovich

Dave informed the membership that the grinders in the shop cannot be used to grind aluminum, brass or copper.  These metals can cause serious damage and can explode.

Dave also said that it is illegal to transport logs across state borders unless properly treated.

A new motor will take about 3 weeks to get in for the table saw that is down.

Special Projects:  Bob Thompson

Mike reported that Bargains and Treasures did pick up some items and that if they sell the club could see a profit of $321.75.

Colonial Days: Charlie Murray

Charlie showed a picture of the new banner the shop has ordered from D-2 Fabrications that can be used not only at the Colonial Days but for any other times the woodshop participates in an event in the Villages.

Charlie asked for volunteers to help out that day, which is April 2, from 12 noon to 4pm.  He has John Herega, Larnie Cross, Bob Bell and Frank Gisccone willing to turn on the lathes. Anyone else wanting to turn must bring their own tools.

They can turn small items, such as pens, small segmented bowls, honey dippers etc. Bill McGinnis will  have carvers there in one tent and Dan Palo will take care of the Toy area.

Education: Bob Mathews

Mike, standing in for Bob, reported that all of the previously stored wood in the wood shed, except one piece, has been used by the instructors and has been cleared away.

Please keep an eye open for any emails that will inform the members if there are any vacancies in the upcoming classes.

Bob is working on putting a class together to “Train the Trainers”.

Toys: Dan Palo/Ron Gammon

Ron mentioned that there are a lot of pennies that need sorting if the Toy Department is still relying on that as a source of income.

The Toy Department still has a booth on the square at Sumter Landing on the 3rd Tuesday of each month.  Volunteers are needed to help out.

Web Site: Hans Zassenhaus

Hans gave a video presentation on the web site.   Hans stressed that he needs correct email address for each member.

Hans shared a few tips about the web site. There are 2-2 1/2 years of pictures on the site. Look under Woodworking.com for some good information.  There is a new report under education with classes that are still open.

Safety: John Herga

There will be a Turners meeting on Tuesday March 18th at the woodshop at 7pm.

The demonstrator will be Earl Rich.

John informed the members that all of the chucks are standardized except for the pen chucks.

Some new curved tool rests are now in the shop and all tool rests have been painted to correspond to the correct lathe.

The oldest lathe is being replaced and the old one is up for bid, which will start at $50.  Bidding will go on until March 29th at 4pm.

The Safety committee is working on video training.

The last Defibrillator class is this month.  More classes will be held this summer.

There are equipment binders in the library that show how to correctly use the equipment in the shop.  Everyone is encouraged to take advantage of this information.

New training videos are still being made.

There should not be any spray cans used in the shop.  If you need to spray anything take it outside.

It has been noted that some members are not using the correct side shields on the safety glasses.

There has been good feedback on the lights on the band saws and grinders.
