The Villages Woodworker’s Club

July 8, 2014

Laurel Manor 7pm

Mike Borfitz, President called the meeting to order at 7pm.

The Pledge of Allegiance was said by all attending. A moment of silence was observed to remember the three members who pass away this past month.  Jan Melberg, Don Good and Ken Ross.

Membership and Visitor Tally:  There were six new members and visitors present.  Membership now stands at 846. There have been 65 new members since the beginning of the year.  The guest traffic has slowed down with only 44 visitors this past month.

Lumber Position:  As previously shared, Murry has decided to pass the reins of lumber manager on to another willing soul.  To date, three people have shown interest.  There will be a meeting with Murry on Thursday the 10th a 9:00am to discuss the responsibilities of the position.  Mike mentioned that anyone interested could attend the meeting.  It is a job that requires back-up and muscle.

 Department Reports:

 Safety/Turners: John Herga

John reminded the members that there would not be any Turners meetings in July or August.  They will resume in September.

John has a safety presentation that he will present when the seasonal residents return.

If any of the new members are interested in volunteering for a committee, they would be welcome on the Safety committee.

Board Comments: Jim Spallone

Jim as Board Chairman welcomed the new members and visitors.  Jim reported that the Board approved Ernie DiSantis as chairman of the Nomination Committee.  Three members will be needed to replace the outgoing Board Members.  If anyone is interested please submit a resume to Ernie.

Jim said he would like to see a cross section of members represented.

Carvers:  Bill McGinnis

Bill reported that there are five new members interested in carving.  He needs someone on Tuesday to help coach.

Certification and Monitor training:  Dick Besler

Mike received information from Dick Besler that the certification classes in July on the 10th and 24th are full (5 each). The August 7th class also has 5 members signed up.  There are openings in the August 21st class.

Monitor training is still on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month.  All members are encouraged to review the monitor training tapes and videoes before doing their 4 hour obligation.

Office Administration:  Anne Bell

Anne reminded everyone that every member must do monitor training every two years.

 Education:  Bob Mathews

Bob still needs to hear from several key instructors regarding their schedules as to the classes they will instruct.

Bob proceeded to explain how the education program works.  Classes are usually from 4pm to 6pm.  However some classes may run later.  The fall class schedule will be posted on the website and sign up may be the end of August with classes beginning about September 8th.  Fall classes run from September to December.  Spring classes will be from January to May.

Currently there are 30-32 instructors.  There will be some repeat classes but the lathe classes fill up fast.

 Shop Administration: Dave Adamovich

Dave explained why two of the machines in the shop are locked out.  The large sander is a $12,000 machine.  Dave will be training more people on this machine to cover the hours he and the other trained members are not there.

If no one is available to help on the sander a member can leave his/her project with a note on it for Dave and he will do it the next morning.

The band saw is locked out can be used by anyone that is in need of a precision cut.  He is willing to teach anyone who does not know how to use this machine.  The key can be obtained from the maintenance department.

 Urn Project: Tom Miller

This week 40 urns made by Alvin and his helpers where sent to Tampa.  About 80% of the urns are placed in the ground so the size is not crucial.

Two weeks ago The Sons of the Foreign Legion donated $1,000 to the Urn project.  We also received more wood from the National Organization.  Tom asked that the members not use this wood for projects, but ONLY for urns.

 Web-site: Hans Zassenhause

Hans reported that all of the class schedules will be on the website.  The week before the first class an e-mail will be sent out to the class members as a reminder.  The complete schedule of classes can be printed. All of the classes, monitor training and certification schedules are posted on the web site.  If anyone has anything they want posted they should let Hans know.  There are currently about 78 videos on the website that anyone can view.

For the benefit of the new members and visitors Mike explained about the Toy Department’s contribution of toys to children in need.  Just under 6,000 toys where given away last Christmas.

Mike also mentioned the Eagle Cane project and how the Urn project got started.

Mike reminded the members that there is a need for raffle pieces and door prizes for this year’s Christmas party.  The objects will be needed by the beginning of November.
