The Villages Woodworker’s Club

April 8, 2014

Laurel Manor 7pm

Mike Borfitz, president called the meeting to order at 7pm.

The Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence were observed by those present.

Mike welcomed all new members and guests.

Membership and Visitor Tally:

We currently have 816 paid members.  Since the last meeting we entertained 192 guests.

Some of you have noticed there was a survey on our website seeking input on direction should our total become prohibitive.  Mike assured everyone that those questions are just for the collection of general feelings.  While we want to keep our fingers on the pulse of the club and its usage, we are not planning any drastic changes at this time.

Department reports: Carvers

We are happy to report that the carvers with the help of Bill McGinnis have a video that will be shown at the next meeting.  Bill demonstrates a beginner’s project and emphasizes how easy it is.  The video is now on the website.

Certification: Dick Besler

Dick reminded everyone that the monitor training will be on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month from now on from 4 to 6 at the wood shop.  He asked that you come before the door is locked at 4pm.

There were three members certified on the 3rd of April.

If there is anyone who cannot stand or walk during the four hours of monitor duty please let Dick know.  Every effort will be made to have you work the tool crib.  There will be a red folder in the tool crib where you can sign your name and ID number.   Anne Bell suggested if anyone is seasonal they should notify the office and pay their dues early in order to get the tool crib instead of the floor duty.

There is a new certification film that will be on the website that has only the instructors in it. Dick encourages all members to view it.  It should be on the website in the next couple of weeks.

Dick also spoke to the fact that members are not cleaning up after themselves.  Everyone should be aware of the mess they make at a machine and clean up when they have finished.

Safety/Turners: John Herega

The Turners meeting will be on Tues. April 15th at 7pm.  The demonstrator will be Ron Browning.  Ron is a great demonstrator.

John also encouraged all members who have a hard time doing floor monitoring to let the front desk know.

Shop Administrator:  Dave Adamovich

The Villages is working on our A/C.  One is being repaired but the other one will need to be replaced. He is still working on getting the motor for the table saw that is down.  There is a video on the safe use of the table saw.  Please go to website and view this video.

Mike spoke to the fact that she received a letter from a member concerned about the way the equipment is left.  Several points made where that the monitors have the authority to remind members to clean up his/her mess. Monitors are the membership and everyone has the authority and responsibility to clean up after themselves and to remind others to clean up.

Special Projects:  Bob Thompson

Bob read a report he compiled from when he took over the Special Project department in November 2013.  See attached report.  Bob asked for some help from anyone with a little time to donate to his department.

Toys: Dan Pallo/ Ron Gammon

In Dan’s absents Ron reported that the Toy Department will be on the square at Sumter Landing from 4:30. If anyone would like to come and donate some time it would be appreciated.  At the Colonial Days the toy tent received in donations $291.

Dan is looking for someone to help him in the toy department with the intention of taking over sometime in the future.  Dan’s other obligations are making it impossible for him to be at the shop as much as it is needed.

Website: Hans Zassenhaus

Hans reminded everyone to notify him if they change their email address.

Colonial Days Report:  Mike Borfitz

A preliminary report has been playing on the screen in the lunch room, with pictures of everyone pitching in to make it a great success.  Mike thanked Charlie Murray as chairman, for all of the hard work he did to make it a great day.  Ed DeHart lugged things to and from the shop in his truck.

John Herega, Larnie Cross, Bob Bell, Ed Charbonneau, Sandy Moraco and Steve Yovan took turns on the lathes.  Frank Giaccone made and pen and assembled a number more.  Linda Sampson was our head cheerleader talking up the club and selling card holders.  Dan Pallo cut out children’s puzzles using the scroll saw.  Dan sold many ball and cup toys which help net $291.   The carvers demonstrated their talents and many members gladly talked about our club to interested people.

This being the first year we were able to sell some items the club received $585.66 after tax and money reimbursed for supplies.

Metro Crime Prevention of Florida:

Joe Pine covered Identity Theft and many other topics.  The information given was very helpful and to the point.  The members were given a website to contact to help prevent Identity Theft.   Joe spoke about the younger people (grandchildren) and how putting pictures and information on face book can have a bad effect on them in later years. He gave us some information on the crime in the Villages.  Ideas on how to save guard our valuables.   Overall it was a good presentation with a lot of good ideas that we can easily implement in our lives.

Joe also gave a demonstration on a home security system.

Linda Sampson reminded the women in the audience about the pool party luncheon at her home on Monday April 28th.  There is a signup sheet at the front desk or anyone can call her for information.
