The Villages Woodworkers Club

April 14, 2015

Laurel Manor

Meeting called order by the President Mike Borftiz

The Pledge of Allegiance was said and a moment of silence was observed  by all members. Good thoughts and wishes can be offered up for Richard Knie who was told to put his affairs in order, also for Skip who has completed his treatments and for Andy Kelly who is with us tonight after a long bout of treatments.

Members and Visitor Tally:

New members introduced themselves.  Our membership now stands at 832, that is up by 4 since last month.

We had 203 visitors this past month.  The count of members who chose the Villages as a place to live, partly because of the Woodshop was 14.  Thanks so much.

Tonight’s Agenda:

Mike did a presentation and explanation of the organization chart of the Woodworkers club. She had handouts showing the names and positions of the Board of Directors and the everyday chart.  Mike went over the charts from the video screen.

Insurance:

Mike informed the membership we are looking at the current insurance policy and am finding it does not cover all of the items we would like.  The current policy is from when the Club first started.  It does not address some of the items that are needed to make sure the Club is sufficiently covered at this time.  There was a meeting today (April 14th) with the District and Scott Hinderman, agent for Brown & Brown insurance agency.  Mr. Hinderman will prepare a new policy to cover the items that were brought to his attention at the meeting.  The premium will be slightly higher but the policy will be more in line with what is needed to cover any losses and will be more in line with our current organization.

Vending Machine:

The new vending machine will be in the shop in the next 10 days.  John Herega is working on the placement of it.

Lumber Video:

A video about the Woodshed hosted by Steve Yovan was shown. It explained the types of wood we have, how to purchase it and when.

Department reports:

IT Department: Ray Roberts

Ray reported that the committee is getting feedback from all of the department heads.  The committee will try and simplify the procedures.  It will take some time to purge the old files.  Each one needs to be checked out.

Certification and Monitor training: Dick Besler

Mike did a power point presentation on the importance of the monitors and monitoring the members when on duty.  She did a Does and Don’t video.

Dick said that Monitor training is now, back on the normal schedule. The dates being the first and third Wednesday of each month.

The safety committee has added a place for comments on the cover sheet with the check sheet that the monitors use daily, regarding accidents that happen in the shop.  Should you see someone get hurt but does not require 911, just write down a simple statement about it on the sheet.  Name of person, time and what happened.

Dick brought to the members attention that there are switches at each end of the room where the lathes are.  If you turn the switch on please remember to turn it off when done.

The monitor training is trying to cover all of the new machines so the monitors are familiar with them.

The mentoring program has been up and running since March 1st.  Dick has 53 names to hand out to new members so they can have a mentor help them with any questions or problems.

Certification: There is only one planned for April 23rd

All of the dates for Monitor training and Certification will be posted on the white board in the front office area.

Office Administration:  Anne Bell

Anne asked if anyone was interested in working with her on the nomination committee to please contact her.  We will need to fill 3 places on the Board for next year and any positions that may come up for the officers of the club or the Board.

If anyone has a medical reason why they cannot do monitor duty and would need to do Tool crib instead, they need to renew their yearly membership as early as possible. The slots for tool crib go fast.

If there are any new female members who would like to be put on the Ladies list, let Anne know.

Please try not to bring in $100 bills, the front office rarely has change for that large a bill.

Shop Administration: Dave Adamovich

Dave asked that all new members please ask him about any machine you may not know how to operate before you attempt to do something and have trouble.

Dave is still waiting for the motor for the table saw.

Toys: Conway Williams

Conway reported that the toy department is about 1,008 toys at this time, over last year. They have completed 1994 toys so far. At this rate we should reach our goal of 6,000 or more.

The Toys on the square, which we do monthly, took in $433.

Ron Gammon said that the coins that were collected from the square fountain netted us $196 to add to the toy budget.

Urn Project:  Tom Miller

That project is still on hold.  We have a large surplus at this time.

Safety/Turners: John Herega

We currently do not have any classes scheduled for CPR, but will have some later this year.  One of the shop members is certified to teach these classes.  He only charges for the ID card.

John asked that when on Monitor duty you document any incident that pertains to an injury. Any injury that requires more than just a band aide, please make a note.

We have been taking a random count of members in the shop on any given day.  So far we have not exceeded more than 40-50 members at one time. The Fire Marshall will only allow 90 persons in the building at once.

There are 3 emergency shut off switches, one by the NE door, one by the special project door and one in the carvers room.  Take the time to look for these switches so in case you may have to turn the shop off, you will know where to go.

The Turners meeting will be on Tues. April 21, at 7pm in the shop.  Steve Yovan is going to demonstrate making a chuck for the segmented bowls.

Alice Besler talked about Biological spills along with a Power Point presentation.

Alice explained what to do with the bodily fluids if someone got sick in the shop.  She explained that there are buckets of saw dust in two or three different places in the shop, to be used for cleanup.  She also explained what to use to clean up after, bleach for any blood spills and disinfectant for all other bodily fluids.  Place all cleanup items in a white plastic bag and dispose of in the dumpter.

Special Projects: Hans Zassenhaus

Hans did give a brief update about the website.  There are over 900 items on the site that may need to be reformatted.  He is working diligently to get this done.

Hans started accepting special projects as of April 1st.  We had 30 back log items prior to that, now we are up to 81 again.  If you have any time please take on a simple project, such as gluing or a simple repair to help get caught up.

Ken Vanderloop sent a message of thanks to all who sent cards and well wishes to him.

Break 8:21 to 8:31

Show and tell:

Tom Miller brought in a cutting board that he made.  He also brought one in that he purchased for $20.  The question was how much more did it cost for him to make one?  But then you do not have the satisfaction of giving away something that you made.

A J Brochu made a wing bowl in Ray Roberts class from green magnolia

Debbie Larouere made a knife holder

John Herega mentioned that the shop has a radial arm saw and a drum sander up for auction, so if anyone would like to bid on them they can up to May2. The equipment will be in the shed if you wish to look at them.  Then they will have one week to take it home.

50/50

Meeting adjourned at 8:42
