General Meeting of the Villages Woodshop Club

The regular monthly meeting of the VWC was called to order at 7:00 PM

 

Mike Borfitz, President, led the pledge of allegiance followed by a moment of silence.

Introduction of New Members and Guests:

·         New members and visitors were welcomed and asked to introduce and tell a little about themselves.

Mike’s Announcements:

·         The total number of members at year end was 1,070 members with an additional 373 members on the waiting list.

·         Mike announced the following members were elected in January:

Ø  Officer, Vice President – Richard Peirce

Ø  Board of Directors – Dan Rozko, Alice Besler and Steve Mendelson

Ø  Chairman of the Board of Directors – Stephan Yovan

·         The total number of members at the  end of the year was 1,070 active members with an additional 373 members on the waiting list.

·         Mike praised the Urn Makers for setting up a production line which significantly increases the number of Urns produced.

·         Clean up day – The shop will be closed at 4:00 pm on March 12 and will stay closed through March 13.

·         Members could sign up for CPR Classes.

 

General Announcements:

·         Jill Bulmash – Gave an interesting talk on what can be created with the laser. She stressed that this was only a minor example of what can be made.  She demonstrated a book made with a living hinge, a tie, A lamp shade, a box to hold tissue, etc. All items were made from a flat piece of wood, but because of the laser's ability to cut very fine lines through the wood it can be bent to any shape from square to cube to round.

·         Stephan Yovan auctioned off 4 pieces of sycamore wood that was donated by one of the members. He was able to raise $70 for the club.

·         Bob Behrens talked about clamps that were being destroyed by members using plyers on the handles. Bob pointed out that not only were they destroying the handles, but by making the joint so tight they were squeezing out all the glue making the joint weaker. There is a video on the VWC web site explaining how to glue joints.

Show and tell-

·         Lowell Sunderman showed a bread paddle which had images carved into the wood by the laser.

·         Clyde Hamilton showed a flag box made by one of the members

·         Art George showed an end table.

·         An example of the Urns made by the VWC was shown.

·         Dianne Zimerman showed off some artwork she created from dried queen palm pods. She stands the pods up in a cement and walnut base decorates and lights them with LED lights.
