General Meeting of the Villages Woodshop Club

President Jim Spallone called the meeting to order at 7pm accompanied by the recitation of the pledge of allegiance.  Moment of silence for Joe Humphrey’s who passed away. Joe made all of the club’s nametags.

 

Welcomed eight new members and two visitors in attendance.

 

President’s Report

 

Jim Spallone, President

 

·         Eighty-two new members joined since January 2016. Fourteen new members joined since the last meeting. We now have a total of 891 members.

·         There are twelve new members waiting for certification.

·          We’ve had approximately 55 visitors, who signed our guest book.

·         Mike Borfitz, PR will be giving an overview of the shop to trolley full new Villages sales representatives. The Villages is continuing to grow and the woodshop continues to draw new residents to move to The Villages.

·         Since the passing of Joe Humphrey, we need to find a new vendor to make name tags.

·         We replaced the back office printer.

·         There will be no General and Board of Directors meetings next month.

 

Department Reports:

 

        Vice President – Harm Borfitz – No report.

 

Shop Administration – Dave Adamovich: The 8-inch joiner is down again, the motor is not good, and will need to be rebuilt or replaced.  He’s working to get a new motor. The Delta table saw cable mechanism that releases the guard broke.  This coming fall Dave will be teaching a class each month “ Why and how to use each machine”.  This will be an in-depth training and the classes  (no projects will be made) and will be 10 people or less.  Jim Spallone acknowledged and thanked Dave and all who assist in shop maintenance for their dedication.

  

Certification and Monitor Training – Dick Bessler: Certification is booked through August 4th. We have 12 new members waiting to attend certification. Reminder Certification is held on Thursdays, so check before coming to the shop to work on your projects.  We’ve had excellent turn out for monitor duty training, which all members are required to have every two years. The Mentor Program is going good. The “Need Help Ask Me” program is also going good.

 

Lumber – Stephan Yovan: Jim for Stephan.  Stephan has built up a good inventory and will continue to keep the inventory built up.

 

Office Administration – Anne Bell: Thanked everyone for signing the card for Joe Humphrey.  Education, sign-up for fall classes begin on August 22nd. The shop will be opened early to accommodate the early arrivals.  Explained to the new member’s in attendance why we need to open the shop early for class sign-up, because the members come early because the classes fill up so quickly.  Reminder number’s will be handed out and sign-up will be based on same, also member’s are limited to sign up for two classes for the first two weeks beginning on August 22nd.   Classes will be posted on the Education door at the shop and August 13th and on the website. Payment for 2017 member dues will begin on October 17th thru December 31st. Jim Spallone advised members will receive numerous reminders.  If dues are not paid by December 31st, members will be locked out of the shop for grace period of 30 days, until the dues have been paid.  If due are not paid, the member will be removed as a member of the club, effective February 1st.   Alice Besler asked to remind everyone, signing up for classes and paying dues, to please have the correct change or check and that shop does not take credit or debit cards. 

 

Member Merchandise – Bob BellFriday is the closing date for orders going to Penn State.

 

IT and PR Mike Borfitz:  The IT committee will be meeting this coming Monday.  

 

Special Projects and Website:  Han Zassenhaus: We have 45 open projects with a couple brand new construction. There will be special projects organizational meeting August 9th at 4pm. This is so SP volunteers can get to know each other and with the objective of creating a special projects mentorship program and to take in any suggestions concerning special projects. All members are invited to attend. The classes will be on the website. Looking for a member to serve as his back up to website administration. Any interest, please contact him.  Jim Spallone provided the new member’s in attendance a brief overview of Special Projects.

 

Toys – Conway Williams: The year to date as of end of June 3651 toys. We estimated making 7300 toys in 2016 and we are on target of reaching 7300. We shipped to clients as the end of June 1872 toys. We work with several of customer to take the toys early. The Children’s Home Society is a year round client. The estimated donation value is about $15K for the toy.  Conway stated he has a great team of volunteers working in the toy department and many thanks to them.  Jim Spallone provided new members in attendance brief overview of toys and what a great job Conway does!

 

Video Equipment/ Videographer - Tom Miller:  No report

 

Urn Project – Tom Miller:  Provided an explanation of the Urn project to the new members in attendance.

 

Chairman Board of Directors -Bill McGinnis: Board member Ed DeHart has resigned and Larnie Cross has been appointed to serve out the remainder of the year.

 

Carver’s – Bill McGinnis:  Dominic will be teaching a basic to carving class this fall.

 

Education Bob Matthew:  Anne Bell reported for Bob Matthews. Please see above.   

 

Turners - John Herega:  No meetings until September.  There is a bid sheet at the front desk for a mini lathe (minimum bid of $50) and full size lathe (minimum bid $500). Bidding will end promptly on Saturday July 23 at 4pm.

 

Safety John Herega: Request that the outside carts be returned outside when not in use, as they block the isle, or parked on areas marked with yellow & black tape on the floor.

 

Member Apparel John Herega: Our supplier is having problems. Will look to getting a new supplier if not rectified by the fall. In the meanwhile apparel can purchased, but your name will not be embroidered on the apparel.

 

Announcements: 

Alice Besler advised that we’re limiting our raffle to 25 items and 20 door prizes for our Christmas party. The date she will start taking items is early as September 10th, with an estimated cut off date of late October or early November.

 

Bob Rosen announced he’s the chairman of the nominating committee of the Board of Directors and Officers. We’re looking for new Board members and if any is interested in running for one of the officer’s positions (who have been a member in good standing for one year) to please submit a resume to him. Interviews will begin in September.

Show and Tell Items:  There were no show and tell items.

 

50/50:  Ron Gammon reported that $114 was taken in for the 50/50 raffle.  Four tickets were drawn resulting in one $20.00 winner and two $15.00 winners and one $9.00 winner.
