General Membership Meeting Minutes

September 9, 2014

 The September 9, Membership meeting was called order at 7:01

 After the pledge of allegiance and a short time of silence to remember members who have passed or those needing help, the meeting proceeded.

 New members and/or guests were asked to introduce themselves and share their interest in VWC.

 Mike Borfitz reported that the membership stands at 856 with 19 of those inactive.  We have signed up 78 new members so far in 2014.  The total of visitors for the last month was 69.

 Renewal of Dues:  October 13th, begins the collection of dues for 2015.  The dues remain the same as 2014, $55.

Part of the paperwork required includes signing the waiver for The Villages.  There will be a change instituted this year to include a second signature on the amendment added with The Villages blessing:

In the interest of safety, agreement to this amendment is Required:

Imbibing alcohol on the property of the Villages Woodworkers Club during regular open hours of during training classes is prohibited.  All other times are governed by the Villages Recreation Center practices. Additionally, anyone appearing to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol will be denied use of VWC equipment.

 Department Reports:

John Herega: Safety and Turning

John reminded the members that the next Turners meeting will be Tuesday September 16th at the Wood shop at 7PM.

Bill Dalton will be the demonstrator turning candle holders.

John Scott has stepped forward to be our “Safety Communicator” and has been working with John gather data regarding the accidents in the shop. John asked the members to take note of the new sign over the door going into the back assembly room.  This sign will have news regarding safety issues.  The monitors will have forms to fill out should there be an accident on their watch.

John Herega talked about an accident regarding a member who fell outside the side door.  It happened on the day the new AC was being installed.  The Villages has widened the ramp there and we will be providing cones in the future to designate work being done. 

John asked if anyone would be interested in helping him with his spindle class.

CPR training will begin again in the fall for anyone interested.

 Certification and Monitor Training:  Dick Besler

Dick informed the members that there will be three weeks of monitor training for the next four months Oct. thru Jan.  Starting in February thru April there will be only 2 weeks each month for training.

Dick will have certification this Thursday for 3 members and three weeks in October, three weeks in November, three weeks in December and some flexibility in January.

 Office Administrator: Anne Bell

Dues will be collected starting Oct. 13th ($55) with the two waivers that will need to be signed. When paying your dues you can sign up for monitor duty for next year.  Anyone who has medical or other issues and needs to work the tool crib needs to notify the front desk as soon as possible.

Any member who would like to sign up for additional classes should check the schedule and can sign up next week.

 Shop Administrator: Dave Adamovich

Dave spoke to the membership about the guard on the delta table saw.  He in countered several times when the guard was put on incorrectly or not at all.  He reminded everyone that he is in charge of all maintenance in the shop and if anyone does not know how to handle any of the equipment they can go to him for direction.  Dave also encouraged everyone to check the web site videos for instructions on the use of all of the shop machines.

 Toys: Ron Gammon

Ron thanked everyone who helped collect the coins from the square fountain.  The collected a five gallon bucket of coins that will be cleaned and the money will go to the toy department.  He reminded the members that the Toy Department would be on the Sumter Square on Thur. September 11th

 Colonial Days:

Mike reviewed the changes for the upcoming Colonial Days, being held in January 2015.  Charlie Murray has agreed to put together a plan on how to approach this event given our reduction in space.

 Christmas Party: 2014

Mike is looking for someone to oversee the Christmas Chance Drawing and Door Prize collection.  Please contact her if you are interested in helping in this effort.  The date of the Christmas party is Mon. Dec. 8th at the Savanah Center.

 Mike reminded the members that the shirts and hats are always on sale in the back of the room.

Jerry showed a square chip and dip platter made in Ray Roberts class

Alice Besler had a treasure box she made and a folding tray table

Max displayed 2 small segmented bowls

Charlie Murray made a large segmented bowl and had it engraved for his church

Skip displayed two segmented pieces, a bowl and a rounded vessel
