The Villages Woodworker’s Club

February 10, 2015

Laurel Manor 7pm

President Mike Borfitz called the meeting to order at 7pm

The Pledge of Allegiance and silent time was honored by all members.

Membership and Visitors tally:  New members and guests introduced themselves.  The tally for 2015 is 815 paid members.  If all goes as it did last year we may well reach the 900 mark by year end.

Colonial Days:

Mike was happy to report that the Colonial Days was a huge success this year.  Even though we had a smaller space, which we optimized well, we made approximately $1000 for the club.  Mike thanked everyone who helped make this a great event and all of the volunteers who worked that day.  We have already begun to plan for next year.  Nancy Blackmore has offered to chair the event.  She will have meetings all year long to prepare.

Special Projects:

A group met to establish a friendlier system to move the special projects through the Shop.  They feel they have made it easier and more transparent. If anyone would like to help out in this area, contact Hans or John Justice.  They will not be taking in any large projects this year.

Department reports:

Office Administration:  Anne Bell

Anne thanked all who have given their time to the front desk.  She asked if you want to do a transaction at the front desk, to please try not to do it between the time of 11:45 and 12:15 as that is the time the front desk changes shifts.

Shop Administrator:  Dave Adamovich

Dave mentioned the two new machines we have in the shop.  The new sander and the radial arm saw.  There will be a video shown tonight on each one.  Please take note of the video on how to operate and set it up correctly.  Ask someone if you are not sure.  The radial saw has a new electronic gate on it to control the vacuum.  Dave may ad this feature on some of the other machines in the future.

Toys:  Conway Williams

In January the toy department made 511 toys.  So far in February they have done 292.  A member who has a laser cutter can do the puzzles much faster.  The women of the shop are trying to put a program together to help the Toy Department reach the 6000 goal for the year.

Urns: Tom Miller

Tom received a call from Tampa asking us to stop making the urns for now, as they have a back log.  There may be a class next month on how to make the urns.

Safety/Turners:  John Herega

There were no major safety issues this month.  He talked about removing the guards on the table saws. Making sure the riving knife is in place. ( Not sure about this)

John showed two video’s, one on the radial arm saw and the new sander.  There was also a short piece on how to remove and replace the sanding drums on the drum sander.

The Turners meeting will be Tuesday February 17th in the shop at 7pm.  Larnie Cross will be the demonstrator.

There will be a catalog on our website soon showing the apparel for the shop.

Special Projects and Website:  Hans Zassenhaus

Hans said he had a good meeting with the members who work the special projects.  They discussed how to get things done and how to track the items.  January had 93 projects done, 23 in one day.  Took in 134 so the backlog is100 – 115.   The shop will not take items that can be purchased or made by local vendors.  We will continue to do repairs, some custom things but nothing metal.  During this busy time of the year we will not take anything over 36”.  We may do larger things in the summer when we are not so busy.  Hans thanked the maintenance department for making the shelves for the special projects.  We cannot seem to keep enough card holders in stock.

Lumber: Steve Yovan

Steve indicated that there was a lot of wood for sale and that the purchase of such wood can be done on M-W-F from 11am-4pm. So please plan ahead when working on you projects.

Mike introduced Wayne Cornelius to speak about rustic creations.  Wayne showed many of the items he has made from natural wood.  He has offered to share his knowledge regarding this different median to any member who is interested free of charge.

Linda Samson invited all of the women to a pool party luncheon at her home on April 8th.

Break time 8:07 to 8:17
